The population is one of the major issues today. It is no less than freshwater scarcity or global warming. Earth has limited resources. It cannot fulfill the needs of 7.7 billion people on it. Apart from this, there are those people who fulfill their greed, instead of their needs.
World Population Day is celebrated on the 11th of July every year. It aims at spreading awareness of the rising issues regarding population increase. This event was started in 1989 by the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme).
World Population Day aims to highlights issues such as human rights, gender equality, family planning, etc.
The UNFPA predicted that the women are going to be a massive target amid this Covid-19 pandemic. It has been estimated that due to the disrupted health facilities provided by the UNFPA, 7 million unwanted pregnancies are possible.
Millions of women of low and middle-income countries may not be able to acquire effective contraceptives.
Gender discriminated violence may increase accounting to almost 31 million cases. 2 million estimated cases of female genital mutilation and 13 million cases of child marriages are also estimated due to the brake put on the activities of UNFPA.
This World Population Day is all the more reason needed to celebrate to avert such cases. The need for awareness is real.
Twenty-five years have passed since the International Conference on Population and Development. 179 governments agreed and recognized the fact that gender equality and reproductive health are very much essential to achieve sustainable growth. This year aims to complete the unfinished business.
Along with these goals, this year’s World Population Day aims at educational awareness, environmental awareness, family awareness, and health awareness.
The success of World Population Day lies in the fact that people need to be aware of it. They need to aware of their rights and as well as their duty.
There are still many nations where little or no importance is given to women. They are only viewed as objects of giving birth. Such families do not have any family planning and neither emphasize learning. This is long run limits the use of family resources such as money.
Consider two married couples. Each has limited financial resources. One couple decided to have one baby. The other couple has no planning, they can have 3 babies or 5.
So according to you, which family can manage their financial resources in a better way? It’s obvious, the family who has a definitive family planning can manage the resources in a better way.
An ideal society, in this case, is where every family of the society has an efficient family planning and abide by it. This in turn increases the efficiency of society.
The same applies to a nation and therefore the whole world. There are other factors too. Here we stick to only one i.e. family planning. However, you do get a general idea.
This cannot be achieved in a day. It requires time. Moreover, it can only happen if we stop thinking only for ourselves but as a surviving species, as a whole world.
