After a long decade, MeToo movement started over the past week, and an entertainment and media industry is getting a massive shakeup. Numerous women are coming up with their stories via social media and joining this MeToo movement which has now arrived in India.
This MeToo movement has failed earlier to take root in India but now appeared to be encouraging women to speak them up. All this have been started when actress Tanushree Dutta accused veteran actor Nana Patekar of sexual harassment in 2008. After this many other female journalists came up with their stories of harassment.
It has been seen in the past few days that a bestselling author, a comedian, top journalist as well as many other Bollywood personalities accused of abusing their positions to behave unacceptably towards women.
How MeToo movement arrived and connected other personalities too?
The fresh new incident added in MeToo movement as an actress opened up with her ordeal and blamed ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’ director Luv Ranjan. She accused him asking inappropriate queries regarding her lifestyle. She added that the director asked her to strip down her underwear and after this incident, she moved abroad and settled over there.
This all started when actress Tanushree Dutta accused well-known actor Nana Patekar of his inappropriate behaviors ten years on a film set. With this, a global MeToo movement began and encouraged her to go in public ones again ad filed a complaint against the veteran actor for his wrongdoing.
Tanushree Dutta also alleged that filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri also behaved inappropriately in 2005. She added that she also received threats but won many supports from high profile stars. After this, a Huff Post India report published blames against director Vikas Behl who is one of the four founders of Netflix’s first Indian series ‘Sacred Games.’ A crew member accused Behl that he insisted on escorting her in a hotel in 2015, pretended to pass out drunk on her bed but just to awaken and masturbate on her.
Kangana Ranaut allegations
After this comes, the Queen actress Kangana Ranaut who worked with Behl on Queen in 2014 which was based on women empowerment alleged that director would ‘bury his face in my neck and hold me tight.’ She added that it took great strength and effort to pull myself out’,
Utsav Chakraborty next in the list
Utsav Chakraborty, a Mumbai comedian, found himself under MeToo movement and at the centre of a Twitter storm blaming him of sending lewd messages to young girls and women and requesting them for topless photos. He would now face a possible police investigation.
Chetan Bhagat’s WhatsApp chat
Then comes the screenshots of Chetan Bhagat WhatsApp conversations amid a Chetan Bhagat and the same woman. He is recognized as India’s top-selling authors, and in those chats, he propositioned her and overlooked her objections that he is married. On this matter, Chetan Bhagat confirmed the veracity of this WhatsApp screenshots and posted a lengthy Facebook post. In that post, he was ‘really very sorry to the person concerned and also apologies to his wife.
Varun Grover is a well-known award-winning writer and lyricist and was accused by a former student of Banaras Hindu University for misbehaving in 2001. In a tweet, Varun denied these allegations. He tweeted I wholly and entirely, categorically denies all the claims being made. The screenshot in question is fallacious, deceptive, and defamatory to say the least. Will be issuing a detailed statement soon.
The most shocking allegations came under MeToo movement when a veteran writer and producer “Tara “ fame Vinta Nanda accused the most reputed actor Alok Nath. His image on screen is of Sanskari Babuji. She blamed him of sexually violating her almost two decades back. It was a MeToo movement wave which gave Vinta courage to pen down the experiences which left her shattered entirely.
Nanda wrote’ he was a shameless, alcoholic and obnoxious but was also a TV star of that decade. Owing to his reputation, he was forgiven for his bad behaviour. He also harassed the lead actress of the show who was not at all interested in him’. On this Alok Nath replied that ‘I either admit nor deny these allegations. The rape must have taken place, but the culprit was someone else.’
Then comes allegations on Kailash Kher, a female journalist accused him of harassment and said ‘This creep kept his hand on my thigh.’ On this singer, Kailash Kher said ‘for all people who know me will know how much I respect women.’
Actor Rajat Kapoor was also bee accused by two women for his inappropriate behaviour. One journalist shreds a telephonic interview in which Mr. Rajat allegedly asked as she is as sexy as she sounds. After these Rajat apologies by posting on Twitter and said’ I tried to be a decent man all my life. If at the moment I slipped or hurt anybody I apologize for it. I tried to be a good human being which is a priority for me.
The latest joining was Emraan Hashmi who decided to add on a sexual harassment clause in his contract. MeToo movement has started with rage in the film industry. On the one hand actresses are opening up with their bitter experiences, and on the other hand, many people are supporting this movement.
