Mary Kom Makes History, Wins Record 6th Gold

On 24th November 2018 Mary Kom, a 35-year-old Indian boxer created history and became the most successful boxer in the history of Women’s World Boxing Championships. Today she outclassed Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the women’s 48 kg light flyweight final. This 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships held at the KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.

It was about eight years since Mary Kom won the World Boxing Championships and again she summits clash today to create history. After this win, Mary Kom mow has seven medals under her name in the biennial amateur boxing event.

Before the starting of this championship, Mary Kom reflected her overall journey from the starting. She said ‘it was six years ago, we were suffering in several ways in terms of facilities, travelling and infrastructure. Today all requires is taken care off immediately and no need to worry regarding support and facilities. The upcoming younger generation is far better in comparison to us as they have little worries.’ She entered this competition with a remarkable tally of five gold medals along with silver to her credit.

Mary Kom speaks up after bagging the gold

Manipur Boxer Mary Kom said ‘Firstly I would like to thank all my friends as they came to see my play especially for me it in the contingent and to cheer for us. At this moment I am a bit emotional since I have been feeling there is no category in the Olympic Games. Only because of your love and support I am able to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which I could not qualify four years back. She said ‘ thanks a lot for your love and support. I do not have anything to give except for gold in the country. Still, I am dreaming about going to winning the gold in 2020.’

Mary Kom earlier won six medals at the World Boxing Championships. These include six golds in 2002, 2005,2006,2008 and 2010 along with silver in 2001. Today after her win her medals tally to seven.
